FAQ

You have questions? Good! Have a read of the below:

01

Whats the Cost?

Unfortunately to make the event safe and viable we need to make this a paid event. The Full Bonbeach to St Kilda  super marathon race will be $50 and the half marathon starting at Green Point will be $25.

02

When is this event happening?

The date will be in February with the initial holding date 22/23 Feb..
We will have our experts looking at the long range forecasts and updating us. We will be using a traffic light system where ‘Amber’ will represent a week on standby and ‘Green’ will mean it’s on! (much like Red Bull Storm Chase). Likely launch time will be between 1PM and 3PM. The conditions will be in the range of 16-20 knots SW for a green light.

What do i do when I get to Bonbeach?

Please arrive no later than 11.00AM as there may be congestion for the use of the rigging area, and a limited amount of parking spaces. The parking is ticketed, however if possible it may be best (and cheapest) option to unpack your equipment and park in the street which is free. You can also park in neighbouring streets and walk your equipment down. You should then sign in and get your sail number and waterproof pouch. Updates and announcements will be made every 30 minutes up to the breifing time.

Where is the best place to get updates?

We will be canvassing our social media channels, seabreeze, facebook, twitter and this site of course.

What do  I need to bring?

You will need to make sure you have a board that is 100L or more. You will also have to have a phone with an active data plan so that the tracking software (which you installed prior) continues to work when you are on the water. You will also have to have a PFD and helmet for the race. Make sure you read the Sailing Rules and notice of race before the event to limit the amount of questions during the breifing.

If the event is cancelled will I get my money back?

If the event is cancelled 24 hours prior to happening due to an unfavorable forecast money will be refunded. However should there be a cancellation on the day of the event refunds will be give out of the money remaining after costs are paid.

What about Transport and stuff?

Transport: Unless you have made other arrangements you will be likely leaving your car at Bonbeach and picking it up later. Maxi Taxi’s will be ordered from the Zu to take groups of you from St Kilda back to Bonbeach. Currently the trip self funded and works out to be approximately $10 per seat, so please stash some cash on you for the trip.

Equipment: There will be a couple of large trailers taking gear back down to Bonbeach. Every attempt will be made to ensure that it is secured within the trailers however it would be at the owners risk as boards will be stacked on top of each other.

Clothes change: Please label a garbage bag with your name and put in your change of clothes as well as a towel. This will be driven to the Zu before the race. Don’t put valuables in the garbage bag please. The car will be leaving at approximately 3pm as the downwinder starts.

This is an awesome idea, what can I do to help?

We welcome support from sponsors and individuals in helping make this happen. The following areas are where we could use some help:

Transport: Paying for Maxi Cabs, transporting equipment, pickups of sailors that didn’t make the full trip, transporting dry clothes from Bono to StKilda, general ground support.

Food/Beverage: It would be great if we could have a BBQ and some Beers at the finish.

Water support/Safety: If anyone at all can arrange a boat to Sheppard the sailors on the day, and look to provide some assistance that would be AWESOME! Jetski support also appreciated. We may be able to get a photographer, so if they can be on the boat taking water pic’s that would also be an added plus.

Media/Photography: Anyone who can do video/photography from a boat, or even from land as we pass various points along route would be great. Green point and Sandringham will be locations that will offer great vantage points as sailors cruise by.

I am not sure I can make the distance from Bonbeach, is there else anywhere I can join?

If you feel that the distance is overwhelming you can join the crew as the pass Green point in the Mini-downwinder. A coordinator will be onsite to take your details and launch you when the time is right. You can also get a lift back on one of the Maxi Cabs, but you will need to find a way to get your dry clothes to StKilda. My recommendation is to drop them off there beforehand.

What about Safety?

Every attempt has been made to ensure that the event is safe as possible. LSV will be patroling the areas during the evenet and the appropriate authorities have been informed that the event is happening. In addition the use of GPS tracking of windsurfers during the event is there not only to monitor progress, but to monitor your location also. Please ensure you have downloaded the Free FollowMee Tracking app from the link provided and ensure that its working before the event. Detailed instructions will be provided on configuring the app on the tracking page. Make sure that your phone is fully charged on the day. We will provide waterproof pouches if you do not have one of your own.
